This introductory 2.5-hour course is intended to provide clinicians, working in a variety of settings and with many populations, clinical interviewing and engagement skills through more clearly defining these concepts, examining underlying assumptions, practicing specific strategies and core skills, identifying factors that influence engagement with hard-to-reach clients, and becoming familiarized with Motivational interviewing as an added tool.
Learning Objectives:
- Define basic interviewing and engagement and explain why they are important
- Identify underlying assumptions of these strategies
- Learn and practice clinical interviewing skills
- State research findings regarding the correlation between clinician-client relationship and outcomes
- Identify evidence that engagement is present or absent in the therapeutic relationship
- Identify factors that influence engagement with hard-to-reach clients
- Practice strategies and core skills to increase engagement
- Be familiarized with the principles of Motivational Interviewing
