Assessment and Treatment of Children with Posttraumatic Stress Disorder

This 6-hour course is designed to address the symptoms of trauma and assess whether more in-depth treatment is needed, using assessment tools and measuring the impact of the symptoms on the child’s functioning in important areas of their life. The training will provide information about evidence-based treatments, as well as tools for symptom management that can be helpful for working with children who have experienced trauma.
Learning Objectives:
- Define trauma and trauma symptoms as they relate to Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) in children and is outlined in the DSM-5
- Identify populations at greatest risk for childhood trauma and name the types of childhood trauma that children are likely to experience
- Identify treatments that have shown the most efficacy in the treatment of PTSD in children
- Identify symptoms of PTSD prevalent in children who have experienced trauma, using screening tools and therapist observation
- Provide interventions to alleviate the symptoms of PTSD and improve children’s functioning in day-to-day activities
- Provide strategies for self-care for parents and professionals working with this population
